Interior ministry official results with 74.3% of vote: SYRIZA 35.5%, ND 28.3%, GD 7.01%

Results means that a coalition government -- 150 deputies + one -- must be formed between Parliament-represented parties

Newsroom September 20 07:04

Leftist SYRIZA recorded a clear victory with 74.3% of the votes counted in the late evening. According to the Interior Ministry’s official results, SYRIZA has won 35.5% of the vote, conservative New Democracy 28.3%. Ultra nationalist Golden Dawn is third with 7.1%, followed by ‘Democratic Alignment’ made up socialist PASOK and center-left DIMAR 6.4%, the Communist Party (KKE) with 5.5%, Potami 4%, ANEL (Independent Greeks) 3.6% and Union of Centrists 3.4%. Currently the eight-party parliament does include Panagiotis Lafazanis’ leftist Popular Unity party, as it gets 2.83% of the vote.

To enter parliament a party must exceed the 3-percent threshold of the general vote.

A party needs approximately 36 to 40 percent of the vote for an outright majority (150+1) in Greece’s 300-MP Parliament.

In an announcement just after 8 p.m. (local time) the interior ministry said that with 8.9 percent of the total vote counted, SYRIZA was posting 34.9 percent, followed by ND with 28.9 percent and Golden Dawn third with 7.3 percent.

The snap election was called late last month by Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, after 40 of his deputies refused to back a third memorandum, essentially leaving him without a majority in Parliament.
