Larissa tragedy: 4-year-old boy suffers severe burns

Resulting from candle that started fire in his home after electricity cut off

Newsroom November 24 01:06
A four-year-old boy was rushed to Aglaia Kyriakou Children’s Hospital today with severe burns and respiratory problems after being evacuated from a burning house in Larissa.
A preliminary investigation is currently under way and depositions are being taken in order for experts to piece together the circumstances that led up to the tragedy Wednesday morning.
A deposition was given by the mother of the 4-year-old, though she was in shock and unable to help much.  The fire inspector is currently trying to determine whether the tragedy was caused by a lighted candle in an apartment without electrical current.
Reporters from OnLarissa.gr contacted Aglaia Kyriakou Hospital to learn about the state of the little boy who is being hospitalized in intensive care.  According to the doctors, his condition appears to be stable but serious due to internal burns sustained from smoke inhalation.  “The next 24 hours are critical,” they said.
According to reports, the 5th floor apartment in Mandilara had no power.  Experts determined from the electric panel that the power had been cut off.
The district attorney has ordered that all appropriate actions be taken in order to shed light on the case.  A social worker from the social services department of Larissa has been assigned to the family.
In a statement, the “No Pay” lobby accused the electric company DEH and the “neo-memorandum government of Syriza” of being the perpetrators of the tragedy.
