The new President of France Emmanuel Macron said he would “defend France and defend Europe” during his victory speech, Sunday night in Paris. The pro-European centrist politician, 39, who had the support of the French establishment against populist far right leader Marine Le Pen, received 66.01% of the vote against Le Pen’s 33.9%, according to the official count. Addressing a crowd of thousands of cheering supporters waving French flags who had gathered at the Louvre to hear him speak, Macron said he would “fight against divisions that undermined them [France]’, while the former banker added that he understood the “rage” and “confusion” of those voters who had backed Marine Le Pen. On her part, Marine Le Pen, who campaigned on an ant-EU, anti-globalist and anti-immigration platform, and had acknowledged her opponent’s victory in a phone call to him, expressed her satisfaction over the the result go the National Front. Macron’s won was received with a great reef and satisfaction by many European leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, UK PM Threresa May and European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker.
