Earthquake north of Kilkis – 15 smaller tremors shook the area all night

Many residents came out of their homes and spent the night with blankets in their cars

A 4,8 magnitude earthquake occurred at 06:24 on Tuesday, 2 January, in Kilkis, according to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens.

The epicenter of the earthquake is located about 30 kilometers north of the city of Kilkis and vibration has been felt in many areas of northern Greece and Thessaloniki.

A few minutes later, there was another weak 3,4 vibration, while overnight in the wider area, more than ten earthquakes were recorded, the larger being 4 degrees at 00:13.

These vibrations did not cause any damages, but the residents of the wider area were worried, many of whom came out of their homes and spent the night with blankets in their cars.

According to Dr. Lekkas president of the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, there were 15 smaller earthquakes recorded during the last 24 hours as the phenomenon is ongoing.
