Greeks against conceding the term Macedonia, poll for “THEMA” newspaper shows!

Neatly 7 in 10 Greeks across party lines against concession of name

Newsroom January 15 07:24

The overwhelming majority of the Greek public is against the government conceding the inclusion of the term “Macedonia” in a compound name for FYROM, according to a poll conducted by MARC on behalf of newspaper “THEMA”. The findings showed that 68% of the respondents said that Greece should not agree to a compound name for FYROM that would include the term Macedonia, against 23.6% who said they were willing to compromise. One of the most impressive figures is that even 63.8% of people that voted for SYRIZA in 2015 were against the used of the name Macedonia for FYROM, revealing that the Greek public agreed across party lines on the issue. The poll showed that females and the relatively younger segments of those polled, as 71.3% of women were against any kind of compromise on the matter, compared to 64.9% of men, while the age group between 35-54 were slightly more detrained with 73.7% opposing any compromise, compared to 62.2% in the over 55 age group. Finally, the answers unsurprisingly vary depending on the geographical regions, with 73.3% in Macedonia and Thrace against any concession on the name, compared to 62.5% in Attica.
