Gun-bearing president of PAOK gets 3-Year ban

Savvidis who was fined €100,000 and the club an additional €63,000, must play three matches behind closed doors

Newsroom March 30 08:35

The president of the Greek club PAOK was banned from all football stadiums for three years for storming onto the pitch with a gun during a league game, the league’s disciplinary committee said on Thursday.

The club were also stripped of three points, ending their title chances.

Ivan Savvidis charged onto the pitch with a gun in his belt when a goal for PAOK was disallowed in a match against fellow title contenders AEK on 11 March.

The decision was announced hours after a letter by a FIFA representative recommending the suspension of Greece from sport’s governing body became public.

If the recommendation by Herbert Huebel is officially adopted by FIFA, Greek teams and the national squad will be frozen out of all competitions in what would be a disaster for the game.

Commentators say that the punishment on Savvidis and PAOK was the minimum envisaged by Greek football laws. It is not clear whether it will satisfy FIFA.
