Significant trilateral meeting in Athens between Mitsotakis, Anastasiades and Al- Sisi in Athens signals deepening of ties

A series of agreements will be signed

Newsroom October 19 10:29

The leaders of Greece, Egypt, and Cyprus will be reaffirming their countries close as they are scheduled to meet in Athens for a trilateral meeting and sign a series of agreements of common interests.

PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis, along with Nicos Anastasiades and Abdel Fatah Al- Sisi of Egypt will meet only a few days after the signing of the memorandum on energy interconnection of the two countries.

The cable that will connect Greece with Egypt will pass through the demarcated Exclusive Economic Zone of the two countries. The relevant cooperation agreement for the interconnection of the electricity networks of Greece, the Republic of Cyprus, and Egypt is expected to be formalised today with the signing of a memorandum by the competent ministers, in the presence of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Nicos Anastasiades, and Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

Government sources note that the agreement confirms the solidifying of a strategic partnership between Athens and Cairo. It will be the first interconnection of Europe with Africa for the implementation of a project that will pass through the officially demarcated EEZ of Greece-Egypt and will be able to transfer to Europe -through Greece- “green” electricity.

It is a significant move, at a time, due to the energy crisis, when the debate on the supply and channeling of energy through alternative sources is at the heart of the talks at the European level. In parallel with the work of the tripartite Greece-Cyprus-Egypt Summit, a business conference focusing on the energy and shipping sectors will be held at a central hotel in order to boost the development of sustainable cooperation between the three countries.

Mitsotakis, Anastasiades, and Al-Sisi are expected to adopt a Joint Declaration that will mark the unified, common vision of the three countries for the developments in the wider Mediterranean region, with a focus on cooperation in the field of energy and the environment. The three leaders will discuss regional developments, including the wider Eastern Mediterranean, the Cyprus issue and the issue of Libya on the occasion of the elections scheduled for December 24.

At a time when Ankara wants to restore channels of communication with Cairo to overturn the completion of the agreement on the partial demarcation of the Exclusive Economic Zone between Greece and Egypt, Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Abdel Fattah al-Sisi sends a clear message that it is not only diplomatic or military but covers the economy, which would create close ties and common interests for many decades.
