ISIS suspect arrested in Athens

He had initially been arrested on other charges two weeks ago but was released on restrictive conditions

Greek police have arrested a foreign man accused of being a member of the Islamic terrorist organisation ISIS. The arrest of the man, who is 40 and a foreign national, happened on Thursday afternoon, December 23, according to an announcement by the Hellenic Police, and was carried out by the Counter-Terrorism Service (DAEEV), in collaboration with the National Intelligence Service (NSA).

The suspect was arrested on December 7, 2021, by the Directorate of Foreigners of Attica, accused of being a member of a criminal organization, facilitating entry and exit from the country, possession of passports and travel documents of third parties, forgery, acceptance of proceeds of crime, etc. violations of the weapons law and had been released on restrictive terms.

After police filed a case against the suspect, he will be taken to the Athens Prosecutor of First Instance tomorrow morning, Friday.

The criminal group, the 40-year-old Iraqi was a member of and arrested for on December 7 – and released on bail of 5,000 euros – had a structured and ongoing operation at least since September 2020, with distinct roles and the sole purpose of gaining illicit property through trafficking immigrants to and from Greece.
