Hollywood returns to Thessaloniki: Aaron Eckhart & Nina Dobrev to start shooting “The Bricklayer” (photos)

Up to 18 international films were shot in Greece in 2021 confirming the industry's demand for the country's endless variety of stunning landscapes & monuments

The city hall of Thessaloniki is transformed into…the CIA headquarters, after the shooting of the long-awaited film “The Bricklayer”, starring Aaron Eckhart and Nina Dobrev, begins in March.

Millennium Media selects Thessaloniki for the third time for the Hollywood film after the films “The Enforcer” and “The Expendables 4”, giving a vote of confidence in a city that can support big productions.

Foreign publications state that initially the film was to be shot in Berlin or Amsterdam, but Thessaloniki was the final “winner”.

Since last spring, Nu Boyana Film Studios Hellenic has been cooperating closely with the Ministry of Macedonia – Thrace, the Region of Central Macedonia and the Film Office of the Region, the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the Film Commission Office of the Municipality, as well as all competent bodies, for the facilitation and seamless implementation of the shooting.

The shooting of the impressive action movie “The Bricklayer” will last about two months, presenting emblematic places of Thessaloniki.

In the film, among others, the City Hall of Thessaloniki will have an important role, which will be turned into CIA’s headquarters.

The movie is written by Hanna Weg (Septembers of Shiraz) and Matt Johnson (Into the Blue), and its about someone who blackmails the CIA by killing foreign journalists, making it look as if the agency is responsible. The CIA recalls its leading but also revolutionary agent, forcing him to face his adventurous past while revealing an international conspiracy.

It is directed by Renny Harlin, who has previously directed, among others, the films “Die Hard 2”, “Cliffhanger” and “Long Kiss Goodnight”. Regarding the leading roles of the film, Aaron Eckhart and Nina Dobrev, they are well known…

Eckhart has starred in top Hollywood films such as “The Dark Knight”, “Erin Brockovich” and “Olympus Has Fallen”, while Dobrev also has several appearances, while the role that made her widely known was in the successful series ” The Vampire Diaries”. Other actors have not yet been announced in the cast, but the film is already attracting huge interest from audiences and critics.

Thessaloniki has become a pole of attraction for major Hollywood productions lately. “The Expendables 4” was filmed there in November with Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Megan Fox, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Tony Jaa and Andy Garcia.

In July, Antonio Banderas and Kate Bosworth were just some of the top actors who shot “The Enforcer” there.

Up to eighteen international films were shot in Greece in 2021, confirming the industry’s demand for the country’s almost endless variety of stunning landscapes and monuments. Among them is the Netflix movie, “The Lost Daughter”, which takes place on the enchanting island of Spetses.
