Mitsotakis at Georgetown University: Threats to veto Sweden & Finland joining NATO will backfire on Turkey (video)

"It is not possible for a NATO country to violate another's airspace"

Newsroom May 16 07:50

The open discussion of the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis with the journalist David Ignatius of The Washington Post, at Georgetown University, has ended.

During the open discussion, Mr. Mitsotakis, taking a look at the relations between Greece and the USA, stressed that it is at their best. Then, referring to both democracy around the world and the Republic in Greece, pointed out that Greece was an experiment, because it was a democracy that had nothing to do with today’s democracies, because the slaves until then could not participate in the decisions.

During the discussion with David Ignatius, Mr. Mitsotakis again referred to the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO.

Wanting to send a clear message to Turkey, he stressed that Turkish threats to veto the two countries’ accession to NATO would backfire in Ankara.

“I am waiting for this issue to be resolved quickly and I do not think that any country can block entry into Finland and Sweden, because this is an important moment for the architecture of Europe … I do not believe that this will happen,” said the Greek Prime Minister.

“We must agree that such an organization depends on unanimity, and this is also the case in Europe. A country can block an agreement. What unites us is broader than the disagreements we may have”.

“I told President Erdogan in our last meeting to find a framework for dialogue”, mr. Mitsotakis said.

“There have been systematic violations of our airspace in recent weeks,” the Prime Minister continued. “It is not possible for one NATO country to violate another’s airspace. Let’s agree that we will not provoke each other at least”. Kyriakos Mitsotakis also said, “The United States understands who its credible partners are in the region. Everything I have to say to Tayyip Erdogan I will tell him face to face”.
