PM Mitsotakis on rise in electricity costs: “We are at war, we will protect the purchasing power of citizens”

The PM said the government was covering 60% of the energy costs

Newsroom July 15 01:54

“An additional 40 million euros will be released immediately to cover the bills issued in June,” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a message on the measures amid the pending energy crisis, and the government’s efforts to aid the more vulnerable citizens.

“I will not hide that the global situation is difficult and everywhere, every measure seems small in front of the great needs”, he said in his message about the PowerPasss.
“Within a few weeks, 3 million applications were processed and almost 2 million beneficiaries are already collecting amounts from 18 to 600 euros”, said Mitsotakis in his message to the citizens on the occasion of the activation of the Power Pass for energy.

The PM emphasised that an injustice is being remedied, underlining that a total of 260 million euros are credited to citizens’ accounts, while as he said, another 40 million euros will be given immediately to cover the bills issued in June.

The prime minister noted that this financial aid, combined with other rebates and subsidies, also in place, mitigates the burden of price hikes from the war in Ukraine and the global energy crisis.

“We are at war. And this is the cost of our national defence against a global challenge that calls for a European response. The government will exhaust every fiscal margin to protect citizens’ purchasing power. But the margins have limits. And anyone who promises easy solutions is simply telling easy lies.”
