Deaths up by 6.26% in Greece in the first half of the year

The region of Attica had the highest rate of deaths in absolute terms

The number of deaths in Greece, including deaths due to the pandemic, increased by 5,011 deaths or 6.26% in the first 30 weeks of this year (3/1/2022 – 31/7/2022) and amounted to 85,043 deaths (42,670 men and 42,373 women). During the corresponding period of 2021 (4/1/2021- 1/8/2021) they had risen to 80,032 deaths (40,800 men and 39,232 women).

According to the Hellenic Statistical Service (ELSTAT), an increase of 11,359 deaths (15.42%) occurred compared to the average of the first 30 weeks of the six-year period 2016-2021 (73,684 deaths). The corresponding percentages, per year, for this period amount to 8.37% in 2021 compared to 2020 (73,853 deaths), to -0.95% in 2020 compared to 2019 (74,564 deaths), to 7% in 2019 compared to 2018 (69,688 deaths), to -7.02% in 2018 compared to 2017 (74,949 deaths) and to 8.59% in 2017 compared to 2016 (69,018 deaths).

In the period of the first 30 weeks of 2022 compared to the corresponding period of 2021, the highest percentage increases were recorded on the 5th (31/1/2022- 6/2/2022), on the 4th (24/1/2022- 30/1 /2022), and in the 2nd week (10/1/2022- 1/16/2022), by 42.7%, 40.3%, and 35.2%, respectively. While the most significant percentage decreases were recorded on the 18th (2/5/2022- 8/5/2022), the 26th (27/6/2022- 3/7/2022), and the 25th (20/6/2022- 26/ 6/2022) week, by 20.6%, 19.9%, ​​and 16.4%, respectively.

By age group, it is observed that the deaths are more, in absolute terms, mainly in the age groups over 90 years (2,677 deaths), 85 to 89 years (1,711 deaths), and 75 to 79 years (857 deaths). While fewer deaths were recorded mainly in the age groups of 70 to 74 years (229 deaths), 50 to 54 years (96 deaths), and 55 to 59 years (66 deaths).

The deaths show an increase in 12 regions of the country and a decrease in one. The greatest increase, in absolute terms, occurs in the regions of Attica, Peloponnese, and Western Greece by 1,025, 713, and 673 deaths respectively, while the decrease occurs in the region of Thessaly by 17 deaths.
