PM Mitsotakis met with delegations of American Jewish organisations in New York

Mitsotakis reaffirmed the close ties between Greece and Israel

Newsroom September 21 06:57

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with a delegation of five Jewish-American organisations in New York where he is attending the 77th UN General Assembly.

The PM informed the delegation about the escalating rhetoric of the Turkish leadership and the instrumentalisation of immigration by Ankara, while he emphasised the blatant dispute by Turkey of Greek sovereignty, but also incidents of misinformation by the international media to the detriment of Greece.

After the representatives of the five American-Jewish organizations, the PM met with the President and senior officials of the American-Jewish organization AIPAC.

Cooperation between Greece and Israel

During the meetings, the Prime Minister underlined the close strategic cooperation between Greece and Israel on a wide range of issues, including security and energy, but also the prospect of further tightening of relations both bilaterally and through the multilateral schemes in which the two countries participate.

Mitsotakis stressed the significance of the Greek and the Jewish diaspora in promoting cooperation between Greece, Israel, and the United States in shaping a new security architecture in the Eastern Mediterranean region, especially in the current context, which Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has highlighted the dangers posed by revisionism and the disputing of international legitimacy.

The Prime Minister referred in particular to the role of Greece as a hub for the influx of energy into Europe, while pointing out that Greece constantly supports the expansion and deepening of cooperation between Israel and the European Union.

Mitsotakis reaffirmed Greece’s absolute commitment to the fight against anti-Semitism and the distortion of the historical truth regarding the Holocaust.
