Elections in Italy: Victory with 44.1% for the Meloni-Salvini-Berlusconi coalition

The vote could mark a big political shift for a pivotal European country dealing with ongoing economic and political instability

Giorgia Meloni’s Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) party has gained 26.36% of the vote, according to official results early Monday morning. The party is in a broad right-wing coalition with Lega, under Matteo Salvini, Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia, and a more minor coalition partner, Noi Moderati.

This alliance is set to win 44.43% of the vote, according to exit polls, enough to gain a parliamentary majority with the center-left bloc on 26.57%. Early projections from the actual election results are due Monday morning.

With the votes counted from 90% of the polling stations, the right-wing coalition gathers 44.1% of the votes for the Senate, namely:

Meloni’s Brothers of Italy gather 26.36%
Matteo Salvini’s League of the North gathers 9 .01 %
Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia collects 8.25%
Noi Moderati gathers a percentage of 0.9%.

On the other hand, the center-left formation gathers a percentage of 26.33%, namely:

The Democratic Party of Enrico Letta gathered a percentage of 19.13%, Verdi-Sinistra Italiana, a percentage of 3.56%, Piu Europa, a percentage of 2.95 %

Reuters reported that Italy’s main center-left party conceded defeat early Monday morning.

Reaching political consensus and cementing a coalition could take weeks and a new government may only come to power in October. But the vote could mark a big political shift for a pivotal European country dealing with ongoing economic and political instability.
