Greek and Egyptian Foreign Ministers on Turkish-Libyan agreement – We will defend our sovereign rights

The Greek Minister met with his Egyptian counterpart and talked about bilateral matters

Newsroom October 9 04:40

Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias directly challenged the Turkish-Libyan agreement on hydrocarbons, after the private meeting with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Soukry. In the joint statements, both the Greek and Egyptian ministers disputed the legitimacy of the agreement and expressed their will to defend sovereign rights. “We will defend our sovereign rights by any legal means, we do not undermine the security of the region,” said Mr. Dendias, adding that Greece was ready “to respond to every provocation from Turkey.”

“The recent Libya-Turkey agreement violates the principles of the United Nations. I repeat that the provisional governments cannot ratify an international agreement of any kind,” said the Greek minister. As he explained, “the Libyan government’s mandate has long expired and does not represent the Libyan people.”

Nikos Dendias pointed out that by blackmailing Libya, Turkey is trying to justify a monstrosity. “Turkey is trying to take advantage of the turbulent situation in Libya. I am happy to announce that all those involved and the EU have denounced the memorandum which has no legal basis.”

Earlier, during their meeting, they discussed the Turkish-Libyan agreement. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the long-standing strategic relations between Greece and Egypt, the Eastern Mediterranean, and Libya were also discussed.
