German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to visit Athens on October 26-27

The Geeman spokesperson said Germany is against statements that threaten neighbours, referring to Erdogan's speeches

Newsroom October 21 05:24

German Chancellor Chancellor Olaf Scholz will travel to Athens on Wednesday, October 26, after his visit to Paris, Deputy Government Spokesman Wolfgang Buchner announced on Friday.

According to Buchner, the meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will take place on Thursday and a joint press conference is scheduled for 12:00. A working lunch will follow.

As the German official noted, bilateral and current economic and European issues are on the agenda of the meeting. Mr. Soltz will leave for Berlin in the afternoon of the same day.

In the meantime, Berlin “does not consider threats and unfriendly statements against neighbours to be appropriate,” as deputy government spokesman Wolfgang Buchner pointed out, referring to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s recent statements against Greece.

Responding to a question about how Chancellor Olaf Scholz evaluates Tayyip Erdogan’s threats such as, “We will come one night…”, Mr. Buchner said: “We underline. We always make it clear that we do not consider proper threats and unfriendly statements toward neighbours. The government makes this clear at every opportunity. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs always makes it clear”, to add: “However, I also believe that we should not discuss too much about every phrase that is uttered”.
