Elections in Cyprus: Christoudoulidis goes to the next round with Mavroyiannis (Upd.)

The first round of the presidential elections in Cyprus, for the selection of the successor of Nicos Anastasiades, who is retiring from active politics

Newsroom February 5 01:00

Fourteen candidates for the choice of the successor of Nikos Anastasiadis, who is retiring from active politics after two presidential terms.

The three main contenders for the leadership of the Republic of Cyprus were close associates of Nikos Anastasiadis. These are Averof Neophytou, President of the ruling party of the Democratic Alarm (DIS.SY), Nikos Christodoulidis, for a decade government representative and foreign minister in the Anastasiades government and Andreas Mavroyiannis, negotiator of the Greek Cypriot side in the talks on the Cyprus issue during Anastasiades administration.

According to the measurements that have been made, the most dominant of the three is Nikos Christodoulidis, whose candidacy is supported by the opposition parties (DI.KO, EDEK, DIPA, etc.) although he himself states that he remains in DIS.SY.

It is a two-round election, as no one seems to be able to secure today, the 50% +1 required for the election to the presidency of the Republic of Cyprus.

Nikos Anastasiadis, as the historical leader of DIS.SY, has publicly supported the candidacy of Averof Neophytos, although rumors want him to look favorably on the candidacy of Nikos Christodoulidis, maintaining open channels of communication with him, in order to preserve the unity of the party he led before becoming President of the Republic.

Besides, many members of DIS.SY have openly stood in favor of Nikos Christodoulidis, expressing the opinion that Mr. Neofytou should limit his personal ambitions and the party should support Nikos Christodoulidis, who is supported by large groups of voters who belong to other ideological and political parties.
