F-35: US opens the door to Greece – “Green light” from Menendez

The next steps for the ratification of Athens' defense contract with Washington

Newsroom February 8 09:40

The green light for the sale of F-35s to Greece was given by the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Robert Menendez, as he announced on Tuesday from the Delphi Economic Forum in Washington.

The committee’s Republican vice chairman, Jim Reese, as well as the chairman and vice chairman of the corresponding House committee (Michael McCall, Gregory Meeks) must also agree under the process.

When this consent is secured, which is estimated to be a matter of time, then the US government will formally notify Congress of the sale of F-35s to Greece, and from there the prescribed procedure for the ratification of the defense contract will be followed.

The reaction of Turkey is expected, which through Mevlut Cavusoglu had accused the US of a “lack of balance” in the matter of armaments in Athens and Ankara, officially commenting for the first time on the US proposal to allow the sale of F-35s to Athens.

In his recent visit to our country, the executive vice president of Lockheed Martin, which manufactures the F-35, was particularly revealing about the planes that Greece is going to receive.

Mr. Greg Ulmer stated in his interview with SKAI that the Greek F-35s will be the most modern version of the plane, the Block 4 TR-3 (Tech Refresh).

The new technological elements of the Hellenic Air Force (HAF) F-35s will allow it to have an even better surveillance of the field, it will be able to detect more precisely and at a greater depth the enemy’s lines and it will be able to have direct and better cooperation with the other friendly planes, namely the F-16Vs.

The modern electronic warfare systems of the F-35 Block 4 TR-3s are able to “blind” enemy radars at an even greater depth, while they will render practically useless the S-400 of Turkey and any other air defense system.
