Greek Elections 2023 – Greeks go to voting polls to elect new government

ND is expected to win absolute majority

Newsroom June 25 01:44

Greek citizens are going to the voting polls to elect a new government on Sunday in the run-off elections, as most analysts forecast an easy win for conservative New Democracy (ND).

The only question, according to experts is whether former PM Mitsotakis will manage to pass the 40% threshold which would give his party an absolute majority in parliament.

The first exit polls are expected to be published at 7pm.

Electoral analysts and pollsters, however, believe that the percentage of participation can be a decisive factor for the final outcome of the election result and the formation of the electoral map on Sunday night. The prevailing assessment is that, barring exceptional circumstances, any increased abstention in relation to the May polls, will have a smaller impact on the performance of the ND, compared to the performance of the other parties.

Under these circumstances, as long as New Democracy receives 40% of the votes of the electorate in this election, it will receive the maximum amount of the bonus seats and will “lock” the sought-after absolute parliamentary majority, since regardless of how the remaining 60% to the other parties, the majority faction will have at least 151 seats.

Another question is how many parties will finally manage to elect deputies in the Parliament, with many predicting a composition between 5 and 7 parties.
