High voter turnout for SYRIZA elections run-off between Kasselakis and Achtsioglou

Some 180,000 members and friends of Greece’s main opposition party SYRIZA Progressive Alliance across the country are electing their next leader, as they their votes at 538 polling stations as of 8 a.m. for the runoff election, nominating Alexis Tsipras’ successor. It is noted that Efi Achtsioglou will vote at 11 a.m. in Egaleo.

The participation in the second round of SYRIZA’s elections is high, as based on the data announced shortly after 11:15 in the morning, 39,000 members voted, while last Sunday at the same time 35,000 had voted.

At the same time, according to information, of those who have voted so far, 5,000 had not made it to the first round. It is recalled that the polls will remain open until 8 p.m. unless an extension is granted due to higher turnout.

Before going to vote at 12 noon in Nea Smyrni, Stefanos Kasselakis, the favourite to win against his opponent Effie Achtsioglou, walked his dog with his partner Tyler Macbeth. “I urge everyone to vote. It’s a beautiful process, a new day is dawning,” said Stefanos Kasselakis.
