The officer succumbed to injuries sustained from a naval flare that hit his leg

Newsroom December 29 01:22

In the holy church of Agios Dimitrios in Thessaloniki, relatives, colleagues and friends said their last goodbye to Giorgos Lygeridis, the policeman who died after being seriously injured by a naval flare fired at him by hooligans in Rentis.

The coffin with the body of the policeman was carried to the church at 1 pm by his colleagues of his Anti-Riot Unit.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was also present at the final farewell to the 31-year-old police officer.

Among the first to arrive at the temple was the policeman’s grandfather who was holding a white flower.

The shocking farewell of his colleagues at the morgue

On Friday morning, Professor Giorgos Lyrakos, who works as a psychologist at the General State Hospital of Nikaia where the 31-year-old policeman fought his last battle, revealed the moving farewell of his colleagues at the morgue, a short time after his death was announced.

As Prof. Lyrakos said, “all the children entered the morgue, one by one they hugged him and then made a circle around him and sang the national anthem. For us it was the most shocking moment, it was a lament, a ‘hail’ to life and an ‘immortal’ for the lad”.

“I have never seen such brotherhood and friendship. I saw the pain, the sadness and it was shocking especially their farewell. When a person leaves in such circumstances it is very difficult, especially for the parents, because he left in a way that is not determined by nature”, added Prof. Lyrakis.
