Ursula von der Leyen praises Mitsotakis: “He has put Greece back on the road to success”

The European Commission President said from the podium of the EPP conference - The EPP meets a few hours after the Odessa horror

Newsroom March 7 01:15

“We are very proud of Kyriakos Mitsotakis who has put Greece back on the road to success,” said EPP President Ursula von der Leyen from Bucharest, speaking at the EPP conference.

Prime Minister and President of the New Democracy Kyriakos Mitsotakis participates in the proceedings of the two-day conference of the European People’s Party, in Bucharest.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis met today (Thursday) with the Prime Minister of Romania Marcel Tsolakou at the headquarters of the Romanian government, while at 12:00 the Prime Minister will address the EPP conference.

During the meeting with the Romanian Prime Minister, the strengthening of bilateral cooperation was discussed, with emphasis on energy and interconnectivity.

The Prime Minister reiterated Greece’s role as a provider of energy security, both through the vertical energy corridor and through the FSRU off Alexandroupolis, a project of great importance for energy security and diversification of supply sources.

They also discussed the next steps in the projects of common interest of the trilateral cooperation scheme with the participation of Bulgaria, as well as issues of regional and European interest.

The Prime Minister then met with the President of the Romanian Senate, Nicolae Ciucă, on the sidelines of the European People’s Party conference in Bucharest.

On Wednesday evening, the Prime Minister had a private meeting with the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, at the Cotroceni Palace.

The conference takes place a few hours after the Odessa tragedy.

In view of what happened, and given the international condemnation of the ballistic missile attack, Mr Mitsotakis’ speech at the EPP conference is of particular interest.

Mitsotakis is the last of the speakers among the EPP party presidents, immediately after Poland’s Donald Tusk, which also demonstrates the key role that the New Democracy plays in the internal affairs of the European centre-right.

It is recalled that Mitsotakis and Tusk signed the nomination of von der Leyen for a second term in the Commission, and will also play an important role in the post-election consultations for top European posts.

“If once Mitsotakis’ speech was expected with interest, which would not have been ponderous, now I think everyone is waiting even more to hear him,” a senior European source told protothema.gr yesterday, given that Mitsotakis arrives at the conference venue with the fresh imprint of the war that has changed the landscape of the European continent over the past two years.
