EU Elections: What the polls show – Battle for the 2nd place, a warning sign for high prices

The governing party also suffered losses according to the Metron Analysis survey presented yesterday on the central news bulletin of Mega

Newsroom March 22 01:13

The latest polls have brought back memories of the first four years of the Mitsotakis government, as both the Opinion Poll survey for Action24 and the Metron Analysis survey for the Mega television station show the governing party very close to an electoral performance similar to the 2019 European elections, when New Democracy ranked first with 33.12%.

On the contrary, SYRIZA is far from the results of the previous European elections remains as in 2019 Koumoundourou had received 23.75%, rightfully maintaining the second position.

However, in the upcoming June European elections, the battle for the same position, in all likelihood, between SYRIZA and PASOK, is predicted to be fierce.

This is because the differences between the two parties of the progressive spectrum are marginal in the last two measurements, with the official opposition “widening the gap” in its favor, especially in the Metron Analysis poll for Mega.

For PASOK, the downward trend in terms of opinion poll data continues, overshadowed by the party’s stance on critical legislative issues in the recent period, while the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and especially the Greek Solution under Kyriakos Velopoulos are gaining momentum and increasing the popularity of their parties, as evidenced by their broad, grassroots support.

At the same time, regarding the ranking of the issues facing Greek society, government initiatives to combat inflation do not seem to have convinced public opinion, with 82% expressing dissatisfaction with the handling so far, while the state of the Greek economy remains consistently a major concern.

Specifically, in the Opinion Poll survey for the central news bulletin of Action24, the governing party gains half a percentage point in the last 20 days and reaches 34.4% in voting intention, with the difference from the second-place SYRIZA reaching 21 percentage points, despite the 1.5-point gain by the official opposition.

PASOK continues to suffer losses, as it lost almost one and a half percentage points in the last 20 days and remains “stuck” in third place, with Andreas Loverdos, whose party is recorded at 2.9% in voting intention, surpassing Nikos Androulakis in overall popularity.

Additionally, the Opinion Poll shows Greek Solution with a marginally double-digit percentage – at 10.1% – ahead of the Communist Party (KKE), which was recorded at 9.4%.

In terms of individuals, Kyriakos Mitsotakis remains the most popular political leader, with a slight difference from Dimitris Koutsoumpas, while Stefanos Kasselakis is in seventh place, ahead of Alexis Haritsis, Dimitris Natsios, and Vasilis Stigas. Additionally, 62.5% say they are “slightly or not at all” satisfied with his explanations regarding his business activities. In fact, 40.2% of SYRIZA PS voters express a similar opinion, following the low participation in the elections for the selection of the new coordinators of the party organizations, nationwide.

The governing party also suffered losses according to the Metron Analysis survey presented yesterday on the central news bulletin of Mega, with SYRIZA gaining almost two percentage points and Stefanos Kasselakis, however, not showing a visible rise in suitability for prime minister and popularity.

According to the results of the Metron Analysis, the governing party lost 5.1 percentage points in voter estimation within a month – however, it appears with more than double the percentage compared to SYRIZA, which nevertheless is recorded as the second party in yet another poll. PASOK loses almost two percentage points compared to February, while Metron records low estimates for the Loverdos’ party, at 1%. Meanwhile, Nikos Androulakis loses popularity compared to Zoe Konstantopoulou and now ranks fourth after Dimitris Koutsoumpas and Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

In the evaluation of the Prime Minister and the leader of the official opposition, Kyriakos Mitsotakis appears with a double percentage of positive opinions compared to Stefanos Kassalakis. It is noted that Mr. Mitsotakis is recorded with 34% positive opinion and Mr. Kassalakis with 17% – both above their parties’ percentages – but the president of SYRIZA has gained only one percentage point compared to the previous month.

At the same time, yesterday’s poll records an almost unanimous societal response to the process of assigning responsibility for the train tragedy in Tempi, as 88% answer “no” to whether what has been done by the judiciary and the political system is effective. This reflects a horizontal societal reaction, beyond ideological positions, as reflected in the survey results. Dissatisfaction with the effectiveness of crime prevention remains very high, followed by criticism of institutions.

However, the fact that SYRIZA emerged as the second party in the Metron Analysis poll after a considerable period and with a significant difference from the third, namely PASOK-Movement for Change, has encouraged many of the party’s leading figures. The question of who will come second will largely determine the landscape in the progressive hemisphere after June 9th.
