Sweden: Greta Thunberg is put on trial for disobeying the police

Together with a small group of activists she had blocked the main entrance to the parliament

Newsroom April 23 07:07

Pro-climate activist Greta Thunberg is on trial for disobeying a police order to stop blocking the entrance to Sweden’s parliament during a climate rally, according to court documents released today.

“The trial date has been set for May 8,” a court official told Agence France-Presse today.

Greta Thunberg and a small group of activists had blocked the main entrance to parliament during protests that had begun on March 11 and had been extended for several days.

MPs were able to access the building through secondary doors.

The activist was removed by the police on 12 and 14 March after she refused to leave the site as requested.

She was charged with two counts of civil disobedience, with Thunberg denying the charges against her, according to court documents obtained by AFP.

In February, a judge in London had decided to drop charges against Greta Thunberg for disturbing public order during a demonstration against the hydrocarbon industry in October.

The judge had considered that the police had used excessive repression.

The Swedish activist was twice sentenced by Swedish courts, in July and October 2023, to pay fines for civil disobedience during climate protests.
