Warning from experts: Danger of more wildfires due to high temperatures and drought

These conditions have a direct and indirect impact on how our summer will unfold, say the scientists

Newsroom May 3 03:17

Experts are warning about the increased risk of wildfires due to high temperatures, reduced rainfall, and drought conditions. Meteorologist Theodore Giannaros explained that predictions for May and the summer ahead can only be estimated with sufficient data. He highlights the trend of higher-than-normal temperatures and increasing dryness, leading to heightened flammability in forest areas. He also noted a significant deficit in soil moisture across Greece, contributing to the drying out of vegetation which in turn increased the possibility of fires. Regarding recent wildfires during the months of March-April, Giannaros mentioned the irregular temperatures attributing them to climate change and potential negligence.

Mr. Lagouvardos added that high temperatures accelerate the drying of forests therefore, increasing the risk of wildfires. He underlined the importance of monitoring trends. Interestingly, it remains uncertain whether there will be heatwaves and it remains in questions the degree of their severity. Both experts underscore the need for caution and vigilance amidst the concerning conditions.
