North Macedonia: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismisses Siljanovska-Davkova – We fully respect the Prespa Agreement

Strict message from Mitsotakis: The provocative choice of the president of North Macedonia is illegal and unacceptable

Newsroom May 13 12:48

Calls to condemn the sole use of the name Macedonia by the president of North Macedonia, Gordana Siljanovska, who was sworn in on Sunday in the name of  Macedonia, violating the terms of the Prespa Agreement. The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is proceeding with a statement expressing determination against the agreement and the international obligations arising from it. Consequently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia calls on “especially elected officials” – depicting Siljanovska – to be vigilant, noting that maintaining the country’s Euro-Atlantic path is a strategic interest and guarantee for long-term security and stability.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis strongly condemned the actions of the newly sworn-in president of North Macedonia, who violated the Prespa Agreement by taking the oath in the name of “Macedonia” instead of the agreed “Republic of North Macedonia.” Mitsotakis labeled this move as “illegal and unacceptable,” emphasizing that it violates not only the agreement but also her country’s constitution, risking its future. He rejected such maneuvers and called on her to adhere to her lawful duties. Mitsotakis reiterated Greece’s stance on the importance of honoring agreements for progress in bilateral relations and Skopje’s European integration, emphasizing the need to use the correct constitutional name of the neighboring country and to avoid provocations.

It is known that, as the opposition, New Democracy had voted against the 2019 Agreement. Warning at that time about the problems its inaccuracies would create. However, as a government, New Democracy further expressed that the agreement is respected within the realm of a Greek signature on an international treaty, binding for the country.
