Weather: Subtropical airstream brings heat and dust – Where it will rain today

What is the subtropical airstream - Which areas are affected

Newsroom May 15 02:11

A ‘cocktail’ of high temperatures and African dust is forecasted by meteorologists from tomorrow due to a subtropical airstream approaching Greece. Indicatively, temperatures in many areas will reach 30 to 32 degrees Celsius. Locally in the south and Crete, it is not excluded to reach 34 to 36 degrees Celsius, accompanied by southerly winds. The dust will have a strong and persistent presence in the country’s atmosphere, contributing to a feeling of discomfort.

The areas initially affected by this wave are western and southern Greece, with temperatures slightly above 30 degrees Celsius, and from Saturday, May 18, and onwards, the heat-sensitive areas with temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius, such as Crete (mainly), Boeotia, Phthiotis, Achaia, Ilia, Argolis, and the Dodecanese. In Attica, temperatures will exceed 30 degrees Celsius over the weekend, while in Thessaloniki, they will reach 27 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas explains regarding the airstream bringing African dust that it resembles a ‘long tube-like stream of air with very strong westerly winds at high altitudes. ‘Airstreams are created by a combination of atmospheric heating and the rotation of the planet around its axis. This upper airflow, as well as the almost stormy southerly winds blowing in the west, will cause the transport of African dust, as well as high temperatures in our region, until the beginning of the coming week,’ he notes.
