Tragedy in the centre of Athens: One person dead and one unconscious from fire – They were siblings

They were elderly people - The fire broke out in a second floor apartment in Akadimias

An unconscious man and the body of a woman were found during a fire extinguishing operation in a second-floor apartment on Akademias Street in central Athens.

The fire brigade was called at about 02:30 on Tuesday morning and 15 firefighters with four vehicles and a special air ambulance arrived at the scene.

While extinguishing the fire the firefighters found unconscious initially a man and shortly afterwards the body of a woman.

According to ERT, these were elderly people who were living under miserable conditions as even rubble was found in the apartment.

The fire was quickly brought under control and did not spread to adjacent apartments.

A preliminary investigation is underway into the causes of the fire.
