Mitsotakis: Inaugurated the new center for Civil Protection in Larissa

PM: Over two billion euros for Civil Protection structures - Chaired a meeting on the restoration of the disasters caused by "Daniel" and "Elias" storms

Newsroom June 4 02:11

The Minister of Protection of Thessaly was inaugurated in Larissa by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who subsequently led a meeting focused on recovery measures following the disasters caused by “Daniel” and “Elias” storms.

In Thessaly, a team of ministers was present, and the Prime Minister was welcomed by the Governor of Thessaly, Dimitris Kouretas.

The Prime Minister highlighted that over two billion euros are allocated for Civil Protection structures, emphasizing, “We have to support Thessaly and also to safeguard it from similar future events.”

Mr. Mitsotakis stressed the importance of leveraging technology for accurate weather forecasts. He remarked, “You are aware of the significant efforts our government has made to bolster civil protection in the country. We’re investing more than two billion euros, mainly from European funds, to enhance civil protection infrastructure. However, civil protection isn’t just about infrastructure; it’s also about using technology to provide real-time data and accurate predictive models for weather phenomena.”

He continued, “Civil Protection involves procedures and a spirit of cooperation, and I want to emphasize that. We’ve made substantial progress nationwide in collaborating more effectively. The Fire Service, forest services, municipalities, regions, and the police are all working together under a unified command to handle crises efficiently, prioritizing human life above all else. We’re facing another challenging summer with difficult climatic conditions, which might become the norm. We’ve prepared as best as we can, but our readiness will ultimately be tested in the field, especially in dealing with summer fires and potential flooding similar to last year’s. We will be more prepared because this is an ongoing effort.”

He also expressed hope that the new business center would see minimal use and praised those who expedited the construction of the two infrastructures. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of addressing water scarcity in Thessaly.
