Pompeii: Archaeologists discover rare blue room with frescoes of female figures (video-photos)

According to Italy's Ministry of Culture, the room could be interpreted as a sacristy or a space dedicated to ritual activities and the preservation of sacred objects

Newsroom June 5 03:52

Archaeologists unearthed an elaborately decorated blue room, interpreted as an ancient Roman sanctuary, during recent excavations in Pompiia .

“Pompeii never ceases to amaze, it is a treasure chest that is still partly unexplored. That is why we have funded the new excavations and are working to maintain the high quality of the archaeological park,” said Italy’s Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sanculiano.

The blue colour found in this new discovery is rare, with the culture ministry pointing out that it is generally associated with environments of great decorative importance.

The in-depth analysis of the room, according to the ministry, found that the space could be interpreted as a sacristy or a room dedicated to ritual activities and the preservation of sacred objects.

On the walls of the room are female figures said to depict the four seasons of the year, as well as allegories of agriculture and pastoralism. The new discovery came amid excavations in the Regio IX area of central Pompeii, a residential area that is currently one of the most active excavation sites for new finds.

The excavations are part of a larger project to secure a perimeter between the excavated and unexcavated areas of the archaeological park, which currently has more than 13,000 excavated rooms.

The project aims to improve the structure of the area, making it “protect the vast Pompeian heritage… more effective and sustainable,” the culture ministry said.

It was noted that last week, archaeologists in Pompeii uncovered children’s drawings depicting violent scenes of gladiators and hunters fighting animals.
