EU Elections 2024: Abstention at 59,41%! (Update)

It should be noted that due to the large abstention, the estimate of the result by Singular Logic, instead of 21:00 on Sunday night, was announced at 20:20

Newsroom June 9 09:53

Historic record of abstention is expected in the European elections according to data announced by the Greek Ministry of Interior.

With counted votes now 91% nationwide, participation in today’s electoral process stands at 40.59%! It should be emphasized that in the previous European elections, in 2019, turnout reached levels of 58.69%.

According to electoral analyst Mr. Drymiotis, compared to recent national elections, one million fewer citizens voted today.

Government officials earlier stated that the message of abstention from citizens is very strong and does not concern only one party but the entire political system. However, they noted that the phenomenon of increased abstention is observed historically in European elections. Even more so, as today’s European ballots are the first after 2009 not coinciding simultaneously with local elections.

It should be noted that due to the large abstention, the estimate of the result by Singular Logic, instead of 21:00 on Sunday night, was announced at 20:20.
