Weather: thermal camera records 96°C in buildings and 67°C on asphalt, see video

Areas with trees and parks are significantly cooler - Impressive are the images recorded by the drone with thermal camera in the heat of the heatwave

Newsroom June 13 01:24

The most difficult day of the heat wave is today According to the updated weather bulletin As in several areas the temperature will exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

Impressive are the images recorded by the thermal camera drones that SKY and ERT “recruited” to record the temperatures in the center of Athens.

SKAI’s drone “walks” in Omonia from Athinas Avenue to Kotzias Square and records the highest and lowest temperatures. On the asphalt the thermometer shows up to 67°C, while the coolest part can be seen at the fountain of Omonia Square. On rooftops and balconies of houses the thermal camera records over 80°C.

The drone with the thermal camera in Omonia almost… caught fire. It recorded a temperature of 96.2 degrees Celsius in the buildings, while the temperature in the fountain was 34.9 degrees Celsius.

The following video from the ERT camera reveals the large temperature differences between vegetated areas and areas with concrete and asphalt.

Areas with trees and parks are significantly cooler, while urban areas, especially central areas with many buildings, are much warmer, reinforcing the urban heat island effect.
