Afghanistan: The Brutal Reality – Women Who Defied the Taliban Speak Out

Afghanistan: The Women Who Defied the Taliban – Harrowing Testimonies

After the Taliban seized control, three brave Afghan women activists recount the torture and humiliation they endured for challenging the new regime.

March to Kabul

On August 15, 2021, when the Taliban took over Kabul, Zakia’s life fell apart. She lost her job and, in December 2022, participated in her first protest, marching toward Kabul University. Her defiance was short-lived as Taliban gunmen threatened her life and tried to detain her violently. Zakia managed to escape but was traumatized by the brutality she witnessed.

Arrest and Beatings

Mariam and 23-year-old Parwana Ibrahimkhail Nijrabi were among the protesters arrested after the Taliban took power. Mariam, a widow and sole provider for her children, was violently arrested during a December 2022 protest. She was beaten and called derogatory names. Parwana faced similar violence, being tortured immediately upon arrest and threatened with a gun.

Life in Prison

Mariam, Parwana, and Zakia knew the risks of protesting. Parwana’s prison experience was particularly degrading, with inedible food and threats of being stoned to death. Despite expecting harsh treatment, the reality of their abuse was shocking and dehumanizing. Parwana, accused of promoting immorality and prostitution, often cried herself to sleep, haunted by the threat of stoning.
