Floridis: “Electronic Monitoring for those under supervision for Domestic Violence”

The Minister of Justice presented amendments and additional provisions to address incidents of domestic violence

Newsroom June 20 11:42

Minister of Justice Giorgos Floridis announced the introduction of electronic monitoring, or “bracelets,” for individuals under supervision due to domestic violence.

In light of the recent assault on Sofia Polyzogopoulou by her husband Apostolos Lytras, the Minister remarked on ANT1 television:

“When someone is under supervision, we will propose electronic monitoring with a bracelet. There are also more advanced systems using mobile phones and satellites.”

“The issue is not that Greek society is now facing domestic violence issues. These issues have always existed, but now we have a framework that allows these incidents to come to light. Our dual objective was to create a framework that enables the reporting of incidents and ensures they are brought to justice, provides as much protection as possible to the victim, and allows professionals dealing with domestic violence to report incidents without fear.”

It is noteworthy that the Minister of Justice, in an emergency press conference at 11 a.m., presented amendments and additional provisions for the increasing incidents of domestic violence, as well as changes to the Criminal Procedure Code.

Among other things, he announced victim protection measures including exemption from the hearing process, a special platform for reporting domestic violence incidents, and the provision that prosecutors will automatically order investigations to protect children when victims are involved.
