Stylianides Reveals Plan to Control Rising Ferry Ticket Prices

The actions of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy to prevent unfair increases in ferry ticket prices

Newsroom June 28 02:27

The issue of expensive ferry ticket prices is on the table for yet another summer. The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Christos Stylianides, has taken stronger initiatives to control the situation. Checks have already begun, he has sent a letter to the Competition Commission and a Price Observatory will be set up.

Last winter, consultations, and cooperation with the ferry operators on the issue of containing ticket prices and providing additional offers have been initiated. The result has been positive on the vast majority of ferry connections.

From 07/06/2024 to 16/06/2024, the local Port Authorities carried out 377 inspections on passenger and passenger ferry vessels of the coastal shipping industry, and seven (7) violations were recorded for failure to inform the competent authority about changes in ticket prices (Article 44 para. 13 of Law 4948/2022). At the same time, the procedure for the imposition of administrative sanctions and the prescribed fines was initiated. Intensive controls will continue throughout the summer season.
