Special Weather Bulletin: Heatwave until 19 July – Where the thermometer will show 42 degrees Celsius

The minimum temperatures will be at high levels, especially from Monday onwards

The Southwest Current prevailing in the lower levels of the atmosphere on the coast of Africa and the Central Mediterranean will carry warm air masses towards our region and will cause in Greece very high temperatures which will be maintained at least until Friday 19/7.

The highest temperatures will occur in the interior of mainland Greece (mainly in the west and north) and on the islands of the eastern Aegean Sea. In the coastal areas of the mainland the maximum temperature will be 2 to 4 degrees lower due to the sea breeze. Minimum temperatures will be high, especially from Monday 15/7 onwards.

In more detail:

1. On Saturday (13-7-2024), the maximum temperature will reach:
a. In Macedonia, Thrace, and Epirus, between 37 to 39 degrees Celsius, locally reaching 40 to 41 degrees Celsius in central Macedonia.
b. In Sterea, Thessaly, and the Peloponnese, between 38 to 40 degrees Celsius, locally reaching 41 degrees Celsius.
c. In the Ionian Islands, the islands of the Eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese, and southern Crete, between 36 to 38 degrees Celsius.
d. In the rest of the island regions, between 33 to 35 degrees Celsius.
e. In Attica, between 38 to 39 degrees Celsius.

2. On Sunday (14-7-2024), high temperatures will prevail mainly in the west, north, the islands of the eastern Aegean, and the Dodecanese. The maximum temperature will reach:
a. In Macedonia, Thrace, and Epirus, between 38 to 40 degrees Celsius, locally reaching 41 to 42 degrees Celsius in central Macedonia.
b. In western Sterea, Thessaly, and western Peloponnese, between 40 to 42 degrees Celsius.
c. In eastern Sterea and eastern Peloponnese, between 40 degrees Celsius, locally reaching 41 degrees Celsius.
d. In the Ionian Islands, the islands of the Eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese, and southern Crete, between 37 to 39 degrees Celsius.
e. In the rest of the island regions, between 34 to 36 degrees Celsius.
f. In Attica, between 39 to 40 degrees Celsius.

3. On Monday (15-7-2024), the maximum temperature will reach:
a. In Macedonia, Thrace, and Epirus, between 39 to 40 degrees Celsius, locally reaching 41 to 42 degrees Celsius in central Macedonia.
b. In western Sterea, Thessaly, and western Peloponnese, between 41 to 42 degrees Celsius, possibly locally reaching 43 degrees Celsius.
c. In eastern Sterea and eastern Peloponnese, between 41 to 42 degrees Celsius.
d. In the Ionian Islands, the islands of the Eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese, and southern Crete, between 39 to 40 degrees Celsius.
e. In the rest of the island regions, between 35 to 37 degrees Celsius.
f. In Attica, between 39 to 40 degrees Celsius.

4. Mid-week is expected to peak in temperatures.

Daily reassessment of temperature limits will occur over a three-day horizon. It is noted that conditions of high thermal stress are expected due to the upcoming temperatures, in most continental areas of the country.
