Travel Expenses Reach 3.45 Billion Euros in 2023

The Hellenic Statistical Authority has published the results of a survey on the travel habits of Greek tourists in 2023.

The survey indicates that in 2023, 4.9 million people of all ages made at least one trip, resulting in a total of 8.3 million trips. This represents a 1.7% increase in travelers and a 0.6% increase in trips compared to 2022. The total number of overnight stays in 2023 was 77.8 million, and travel expenses amounted to 3.45 billion euros, marking a 2.2% decrease in overnight stays but a 3.6% increase in expenses compared to 2022.

Specifically, the number of people aged 15 and over who traveled in 2023 reached 4.1 million, a 2.4% increase, while they made 6.9 million trips, a slight decrease of 0.2% compared to 2022. These travelers had a total of 66 million overnight stays and spent 3.18 billion euros, showing a decrease of 3.8% in overnight stays but an increase of 2.8% in expenses compared to 2022.

Most trips made by people aged 15 and over (96.6%) were for personal reasons (rest, recreation, holidays, visiting relatives and friends, other personal reasons), while 3.4% were for business purposes.

Comparing the personal trips in 2023 with those in 2022, there is a 1.9% increase in travelers, a 0.4% increase in the number of trips, and a 3.1% increase in expenses, despite a 3.3% decrease in overnight stays.

Among those traveling for personal reasons in 2023, the 45-64 age group showed the most significant increase, with 4.5% more travelers, 4.6% more trips, 6.2% higher expenses, and a 2.2% increase in overnight stays.

The length of personal trips saw the most significant increase in trips lasting from 4 to 7 nights, with a 10.5% increase in trips and a 9.6% increase in overnight stays.

Most personal trips were made using land transportation (4.7 million trips), followed by sea transportation (1 million trips). Land travel saw the most significant increase, rising by 5.8%.

About 55.5% of personal trips involved non-rental accommodations, with 58% of these being provided free of charge by relatives and friends. These trips accounted for 72.9% of the total number of overnight stays. Trips to privately owned vacation homes increased by 10.3%, with a slight decrease of 0.3% in overnight stays.

For trips involving rented accommodations (44.5% of personal trips), the primary choice was hotels and similar establishments (62.2%). Trips to hotels and similar accommodations increased by 4.1%, with a corresponding 2.3% increase in overnight stays in 2023 compared to 2022.
