August Full Moon Celebrations – Don’t Miss the ‘Sturgeon Moon’ Events

As the August full moon casts its magical glow, museums and archaeological sites throughout Greece are set to host special events in celebration

Newsroom August 19 03:47

The August Full Moon of 2024 will reach its peak on August 19th and is known as the “Sturgeon Moon.”

After sunset, looking toward the southeast, we will witness the moonrise.

According to NASA, the August moon will appear full starting today, allowing us to enjoy the sight of the full moon for several consecutive nights.

This year, the Ministry of Culture will once again organize events for the August Full Moon, coordinated by the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage, offering free entry to selected archaeological sites, monuments, historic places, and museums on the night of the full moon, Monday, August 19th, 2024.

More than one hundred archaeological sites, historic places, museums, and monuments across the country will welcome the public under the moonlight. Events will be held at over fifty archaeological sites and museums, with many others remaining open to the public with free admission.

This year’s program will include events from August 9th to 25th, featuring theater and musical performances, stargazing, storytelling, and guided tours organized by the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage and the General Directorate of Restoration, Museums, and Technical Works, many in collaboration with local authorities and community organizations.

Events will also be held at the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki, as well as the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

The August full moon is also called the “Sturgeon Moon” due to the Native Americans who traditionally fished for this particular species – also known as the beluga sturgeon – around this time.

As every year, the August moon offers enchanting views. Museums and archaeological sites across Greece are preparing events for that night.
