Shipwreck in Palermo: Mike Lynch found dead – Only his 18-year-old daughter remains missing

The confirmed death toll from the shipwreck has risen to six. “Vessels like the Bayesian are unsinkable; it's an incredible story from a technical standpoint,” says the CEO of the company that builds and sells them

Newsroom August 22 12:00

This morning, the fifth body of the missing persons was recovered from the interior of the ill-fated Bayesian, which sank just outside the port of Porticello, Palermo.

According to the latest reports, the confirmed deaths from the shipwreck, which has shocked the international community and raised numerous questions, now stand at six (including the chef who was found dead shortly after the Bayesian sank), while one person is still missing.

Sky News reports that the body recovered today belongs to Mike Lynch. Yesterday, the bodies of the President of Morgan Stanley International, Jonathan Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, and their two spouses were retrieved from the wreck. Only Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, remains missing.

It is worth noting that the luxury yacht, on which British magnate Lynch had invited colleagues and friends to celebrate his recent acquittal from fraud charges, sank to the bottom of the sea within minutes after being hit by a sudden storm early Monday morning.

An “Unsinkable Vessel”

Vessels like the superyacht owned by British magnate Mike Lynch are designed to offer their passengers the utmost safety, said the CEO of the company that builds and sells them in an interview.

Speaking to Sky News a day after the discovery of five more bodies inside the sunken yacht, Giovanni Constantino expressed his feelings upon hearing about the shipwreck, which now has six confirmed deaths, including the chef who was found a few days earlier.

Constantino is the CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the company that built the Bayesian. “As the manufacturer of Perini yachts, I know very well how these vessels are designed and constructed. Perinis are sailing yachts, and sailing yachts are renowned as the safest vessels,” the CEO added, explaining that their structure and keel make them “unsinkable.”

He said that learning about what happened, he felt both deep sadness and disbelief. “This incident sounds to me like an incredible story, both from a technical standpoint and as an event,” he remarked.

As rescue teams continue their efforts today to locate the one remaining missing person, Italian authorities are working to unravel the mystery of the Bayesian’s sinking.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have already begun a preliminary assessment of the events.

According to international media, one of the possibilities being investigated is whether the crew failed to take the necessary measures to protect the passengers, given the warning of severe weather on the fateful night.
