Kasselakis mobilizes his team – Associates urge his return, Temponeras gains momentum

Kasselakis is preparing his next move from Spetses – it is still unknown whether he will run again for the presidency or start a new party – Civil war among the "Kasselistas."

Newsroom September 12 08:43

Kasselakis, the ousted president of SYRIZA Progressive Alliance, is attempting to rally his internal forces, holding a meeting with his close associates. His team has been instructed to stay prepared, both within and outside the party, though no decision has been made regarding his future plans.

Meanwhile, SYRIZA’s Athens branch condemned his ousting as “a non-regulatory decision causing disgust and anger among thousands of party members who fought to keep SYRIZA standing after the electoral collapse of 2023.” Several prominent SYRIZA figures, such as Elena Akrita and Theofilos Xanthopoulos, have voiced support for Kasselakis, questioning the legality of his removal. Evaggelos Antonaros also called on the party’s Secretary, Rania Svigou, to allow Kasselakis to return to his duties.

Within SYRIZA, there is a growing sentiment among “Kasselistas” (Kasselakis supporters) urging him to remain in the party. They view the process that led to his removal as unconstitutional. However, speculation about Kasselakis forming a new party has been dismissed by some, including party Secretary Theodora Tzakri and Akrita, who oppose such a move. Despite this, Kasselakis faces pressure from his supporters to stay within SYRIZA, even as internal conflicts among his faction intensify.

At the same time, rival candidate Pavlos Polakis has engaged in public debates and criticized Kasselakis’s supporters. Polls show Polakis trailing behind Alexis Tsipras and Kasselakis in the race for the party’s leadership. The broader left-wing political landscape is also experiencing movement, with the upcoming election for leadership in the center-left PASOK-KINAL party drawing attention.

Kasselakis’s political future remains uncertain, and it is yet to be seen if he will lead a new party or continue his fight within SYRIZA.
