Emergency weather bulletin: Temperature drop, storms, and strong winds on Sunday and Monday

A change in weather is expected across the country on Sunday and Monday (29 and 30-09-2024), with storms, very strong winds, a noticeable temperature drop, and locally heavy rain and thunderstorms. Gale-force northwesterly winds reaching up to 9 on the Beaufort scale are expected to hit the Ionian Sea and the western mainland from Sunday afternoon, gradually spreading to other areas such as Central Macedonia, the Sporades, eastern Thessaly, Central Greece, Euboea, Kythira, and Crete.

The emergency weather bulletin predicts the following:

A. Gale-force northwesterly winds of 7 to 8, locally reaching 9 on the Beaufort scale, will blow from Sunday afternoon over the Ionian Sea and the western mainland and from the evening over Central Macedonia, the Sporades, eastern Thessaly, Central Greece, Euboea, the Kythira region, and Crete. Winds will also temporarily strengthen in other regions.

A gradual weakening of the winds is expected from midday Monday (30-09-2024).

B. Heavy rain and thunderstorms will occur from Sunday afternoon (29-09-2024) until the early hours of Monday (30-09-2024) in the northeastern parts of the country, specifically in eastern Macedonia, Thrace, and the northeastern Aegean.

C. A temperature drop is expected on Sunday (29-09-2024) in Macedonia, Epirus, and the Ionian Islands, and on Monday (30-09-2024) across the entire country, with a decrease of 6 to 8 degrees Celsius. Indicatively, on Monday, temperatures in Thessaloniki will not exceed 21°C, and in Athens, 24 to 25°C.
