Council of Ministers: 19,181 public sector recruitments approved for 2025 – Over 4,000 in the NHS

How recruitment is distributed

The annual recruitment plan for regular staff, as well as the maximum permitted number of private fixed-term/temporary staff recruitment in the public sector for the year 2025, according to the recommendation of the Public Sector Human Resources Committee, was approved today by the Council of Ministers, following a presentation by the Minister of Interior, Todoris Livanios and the Deputy Minister of Interior, Vivi Charalabogiannis.

Specifically, for 2025, a total of 19,181 recruitments of regular staff and staff with a paid mandate were approved.

The distribution of recruitment, in line with government priorities and based on the Ministry of Interior’s update, focuses mainly on the sectors:

– Health: a total of 4,016 positions were approved to strengthen the National Health System, which implements the Prime Minister’s election pledge of 10,000 recruitments following last year’s approval of 6,500 positions.

– National Defence: the entire request of the productive schools and an additional 2,000 professional soldiers was approved.

– Local Government: one of the strongest boosts of the period from 2020 onwards. Intensity in skilled staff and contributors. Provision to cover needs in institutions based in the affected areas, as well as in smaller municipalities.

– Climate crisis: emphasis on the fire service. All request of productive schools (330) plus specialized firefighters on duty (450 Forest Operations & Special Duty Firefighters), plus 51 positions of specialized other personnel in the corps and in the ministry (helicopter operators, engineers, navigators, etc.).

– Citizen Protection: 1050 in the productive schools (Cadet Police Officers and Lieutenants) and 600 Special Guards. In addition to these, 100 guards and external guards for the local detention facilities and the Elaionas Rehabilitation Center.

– Education: faculty members including appointments to university and medical schools and hospitals. Teachers for the 2025-2026 school year will be approved discretely in May 2025.

– Judiciary: 100 judicial officers plus 272 clerks and other staff to support the faster operation of the courts.

– Social Cohesion and Family: strengthening the structures of the newly created Ministry with 372 positions.

– Control mechanisms – Independent Authorities: 550 positions in the SAI, 60 in the Independent Labour Inspectorate, 61 in the PACEY.

– Transportation: 370 positions in OSI – STASY.

– Reinforcement of consular authorities: 100 positions.

– Rural policy: 186 positions in the central service and supervised bodies.

It should be noted that the planning of 19,181 recruitments in the public sector for 2025 is a continuation of the 91,819 recruitments approved for the years 2020 to 2024, bringing the approved recruitments for the five-year period 2000-2025 to 111,000. Of the total of approximately 111,000 authorized recruitments:

– 26.1 % are in education
– 17,5 % are in health
– 13.2 % are in defence
– 11.7% is for local government
– 7.3% concerns citizen protection
