Israel’s Special Forces Conduct Operations in Southern Lebanon, Searching Hezbollah Tunnels – Invasion Preparations Underway

Wall Street Journal reports small-scale operations; Lebanese soldier killed by Israeli drone strike, and 45 dead in Israeli airstrike on Ain Deleb

Newsroom September 30 05:17

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have initiated small-scale operations in southern Lebanon, including incursions into tunnels used by Hezbollah, in preparation for a possible ground invasion, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), which cites anonymous sources.

These operations, carried out by special units of the Israeli army, are reportedly aimed at gathering intelligence and laying the groundwork for a potential larger assault that could begin as early as this week.

According to the American newspaper, similar operations have taken place over recent months and continue as part of Israel’s strategy to counter Hezbollah, which maintains a strong presence along the Israel-Lebanon border.

Amir Avivi, a former senior Israeli military official, stated that a ground invasion by Israel is imminent and that these raids are part of the preparations.

“The IDF has made many preparations for a ground invasion,” Avivi said. “This always includes special operations as part of the process.” He added that Hezbollah is weakened, and Israel’s key dilemma now is determining how far they should advance into Lebanon. Avivi noted that the timeline and terms under which Israel will withdraw remain unclear.

Israeli tactics appear to focus on smaller incursions intended to scout and map Hezbollah’s underground facilities. These tunnels are designed to allow fighters and weapons to move undetected, presenting a significant security challenge for Israel.

While there has been no official confirmation from the Israeli military, WSJ sources suggest Israel is gearing up for a broader military operation if tensions continue to escalate. The potential invasion aims to neutralize Hezbollah infrastructure, which poses a threat to northern Israel.

Analysts warn that such an operation could trigger a wider conflict between the two sides, as Hezbollah has bolstered its military capabilities and could respond with heavy attacks if an invasion occurs.

Israel’s Defense Minister Signals Ground Invasion to Northern Troops

Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, implied that a ground invasion into Lebanon is on the horizon after telling troops in the country’s northern sector, “We will use all of our capabilities – including you.”

Gallant emphasized that returning displaced Israelis to their homes in the north – around 60,000 have been forced to leave due to repeated rocket fire from Lebanon – is “the mission of the IDF.”

He continued: “This is what we will do, and we will deploy whatever is needed – you, other forces, from the air, sea, and land.” He described the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah as “a significant step, but not the only one.”

Lebanese Army Reports Soldier Killed by Israeli Drone

The Lebanese army reported that one of its soldiers was killed by an Israeli drone strike. According to the country’s news agency, the army’s statement confirmed that “one of the soldiers became a martyr due to an Israeli drone targeting a motorcycle.” The incident occurred at a checkpoint.
