Israel: Its ground invasion in Lebanon is “Limited” – Uncertainty surrounds Iran’s response

"Enclaves 'dangerous to the security of the Israeli people in the northern part of the country' are being targeted, according to the IDF."

Newsroom October 1 07:30

Israel has characterized its ground operations, launched in the early hours of Tuesday, October 1, in southern Lebanon as “limited in scale.” According to official statements from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the goal of the invasion is to dismantle Hezbollah’s military infrastructure in several villages near the Lebanon-Israel border. These areas are considered “dangerous to the security of the Israeli people in the northern part of our country,” as noted by Israel’s statement.

Based on information from Lebanon’s Ministry of Health, approximately 95 people died on Monday alone, raising the death toll to several hundred from recent bombings, mainly in Beirut. In addition to those killed by Israeli strikes in densely populated urban areas, including the attack on Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah‘s underground hideout, which resulted in his death, hundreds of thousands have been left homeless and are now wandering Lebanon, seeking refuge.

Israeli ground forces moved into southern Lebanon early Tuesday, marking a significant escalation of an offensive against Hezbollah.

The latest Israeli incursion involves small special forces units, supported by air cover and artillery positions. Periodic tank fire is heard as mechanized convoys, including armored personnel carriers, cross the Israel-Lebanon border.

All indications suggest that while Israel currently calls the operation “limited,” it could quickly escalate into a full-scale attack on Lebanon, aiming for the total neutralization of Hezbollah. Israeli forces appear determined to completely eliminate the hostile organization, especially as the grim anniversary of October 7 approaches, marking the Hamas-led bloodshed from their surprise attack on Israel.

Israel’s immediate goal is to restore safety for its citizens living along the Lebanese border, many of whom have been forced to abandon their villages due to Hezbollah’s ongoing rocket attacks.

Israel’s intent to strike at its enemies’ critical points, regardless of location, was underscored by a simultaneous, targeted attack on Damascus, the capital of Syria.

Meanwhile, the United States has announced reinforcements for Israel, adding to the 40,000 American soldiers already stationed there. However, the biggest question remains Iran’s response, as Israel’s most powerful and dangerous adversary. Following the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, a strong counterattack was expected from Iran, yet none has materialized so far. Even Iran’s official rhetoric has been relatively moderate and restrained.

While there is uncertainty surrounding Iran’s next steps, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a televised address in English, urged the Iranian people to oppose the “regime of some fanatical theocrats,” referring to the government of Ali Khamenei.

“When Iran is finally free – and that time of liberation is much closer than many believe,” Netanyahu said, “everything will be different. Our two ancient peoples, the Jews and the Persians, will finally live in peace. Right now, Iran’s theocratic regime supports the murderers and rapists of Hamas and Hezbollah. The tyrants of Iran don’t care about your future. You deserve a better leadership. Don’t let a small group of religious fanatics crush your hopes and dreams. You deserve better. Your children deserve better, and so does the entire world. Know that Israel stands with you.”
