Weather: Warm start to the week with 28°C – When cooler temperatures will arrive

This week starts with warm and mostly dry conditions, with temperatures reaching up to 28°C. However, cooler weather is on the horizon, with a noticeable temperature drop expected by the end of the week, marking a shift after a prolonged warm period, as reported by Thodoris Kolydas, the director of the National Weather Service.

In a social media post, Mr. Kolydas noted:

“The heavy rains in the Central Mediterranean, which will be intense, offer some hope for Greece as well. According to the forecast, the areas that are most likely to benefit from rain this weekend are the western parts of the country.”

He also provided a brief forecast:

  • After an extended period of unseasonably warm temperatures, we’re likely to see a sustained temperature drop, with values returning to or slightly below normal for this time of year.
  • By the end of the week, a cool front will arrive, with the possibility of light rain in certain areas.

High Temperatures Reached on Sunday

On Sunday, October 12, temperatures peaked at 30.1°C in Elafonissi, Chania, followed by 29.9°C in Isthmos, Corinth, and 29.7°C in Gortyna, Heraklion. These were among the highest temperatures recorded by the National Observatory of Athens’ network of weather stations.

Today’s forecast includes scattered clouds, with alternating periods of sunshine and cloudy skies. There is a chance of isolated showers in Eastern Central Greece, the Peloponnese, and Crete, mainly in the afternoon. Visibility may be limited in some areas during the morning hours.

Here’s a breakdown of today’s forecast by region:

  • Western Macedonia: Temperatures ranging from 9 to 22°C.
  • Macedonia and Thrace: 9 to 26°C.
  • Thessaly: 14 to 26°C.
  • Epirus: 11 to 26°C.
  • Sterea Greece and Peloponnese: 13 to 28°C.
  • Ionian Islands: 13 to 25°C.
  • Aegean Islands and Crete: 14 to 28°C.

Winds in the Aegean will be mostly from the north at 3 to 5 Beaufort, increasing locally to 6 Beaufort in the afternoon. In the Ionian Sea, winds will come from the northwest at 3 to 5 Beaufort, with occasional gusts up to 6 Beaufort.

Regional Weather Conditions

  • Macedonia and Thrace: Mostly clear skies with variable light winds. Temperatures between 13 and 25°C.
  • Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Sterea, Western Peloponnese: Clear skies, with northwestern winds at 3 to 5 Beaufort. Temperatures from 16 to 28°C.
  • Cyclades and Crete: Light clouds, becoming denser in Crete, with a chance of light rain. Winds will be from the north, ranging from 4 to 6 Beaufort. Temperatures will range from 18 to 28°C.
  • Eastern Aegean Islands and Dodecanese: Clear skies, with north-northwest winds between 4 and 6 Beaufort. Temperatures will range from 19 to 28°C.

  • Friday, October 18: Scattered clouds in the eastern mainland and the Aegean. By evening, clouds will thicken in the west, with a chance of rain in the Ionian Sea. Winds will weaken in the afternoon, and temperatures will remain stable.
