USA: Democrat Sarah McBride is expected to become the first openly bi-sexual member of the US Congress

"People have seen that I have experience fighting battles, looking for details, uniting Democrats and Republicans," McBride says

Newsroom October 29 03:37

Democrat Sara McBride is expected to make history next week and become the first openly bisexual person elected to the US Congress.

And it won’t be the first time he’ll make history: in 2016 he became the first openly biracial person to address a major political convention in the US, and in 2020 the first to be elected to a state Senate seat in the states.

McBride, 34, is expected to secure the party’s only House seat in Delaware after receiving the Democratic Party’s nomination in the September primary.

Elected officials from every level of government know that we need our next member of Congress to be ready to deliver for Delawereans on day one.

“The fact that it’s even a possible candidacy of someone like me … is indicative of the citizens of Delaware,” McBride said in an interview Saturday.

However, she attempted to downplay the historic nature of the nomination that secured her expected victory.

“People have seen that I have experience fighting battles, looking for details, uniting Democrats and Republicans. That’s why I campaign. I’m not running under a flag of identity,” she says.

Controversial for active participation of transgender people in politics

Bisexual rights have become a source of political controversy in the US. Congressmen in 37 US states have introduced at least 142 bills to restrict health care based on gender affirmation for transgender people in 2023, Reuters reported, nearly three times as many as a year earlier.

In Congress, Republicans have been pushing anti-transgender bills at the national level for years.

McBride, however, is not concerned about working with persons who oppose bipartisan rights in Congress.

Her opponent, Republican candidate John Whalen III, has not focused his campaign on political issues related to sexual identification but instead on immigration and the economy.
