Ampelokipoi – explosion: Counterterrorism investigates target of bomb being assembled in apartment – Scenarios under review

The identity of the deceased man and a woman with keys to the apartment on Arkadias Street, who has been identified, are key elements in the investigation - There are also similarities with a failed attack on the MAT headquarters in Zografou

Newsroom November 1 05:17

Counterterrorism is mapping the activities of the occupants in the “safe house” apartment on Arkadias Street in Ampelokipoi. They have identified the injured young woman from the explosion as well as another woman, also associated with the anti-authoritarian movement, who had keys to the apartment.

Based on surveillance footage, investigators consider it likely that the Israeli embassy was their target, as video evidence shows individuals walking routes toward the embassy. However, this is not confirmed as the available evidence is still insufficient but does provide initial guidance for the investigation.

In the Ampelokipoi “safe house” apartment, traces of dynamite and gelatin dynamite were found. Counterterrorism analysts note similarities to the failed attack on the MAT headquarters in Zografou.

Today, authorities announced the discovery of two pistols, a loaded magazine, cell phones, and digital evidence in the apartment, which are being analyzed at the forensic labs.

The Identity of the Deceased Man Remains a Mystery

At the same time, ELAS investigators are working to identify the man who died in the powerful explosion that occurred in the third-floor apartment in Ampelokipoi, believing that his identity will be key to solving the case. According to reports, Counterterrorism has identified the man, although he is not known to have a criminal record.

A DNA sample from his remains will be analyzed to check if he is listed in criminal databases. Yesterday, police located a body part and collected fingerprints, though results have yet to be obtained.

Investigators have fingerprinted the 32-year-old woman injured in the explosion who is currently hospitalized. She has been previously monitored by State Security, having been arrested in 2015 for an attack on a university dean. She is seriously injured and currently unable to provide a statement.
