U.S. Elections 2024: Macron’s Message to European Leaders Against the “Every Man for Himself” Trend Following Trump’s Election

Emmanuel Macron had previously congratulated "President Donald Trump," stating he was "ready to work together, as we did during his previous term."

Newsroom November 6 02:34

French President Emmanuel Macron warned European leaders today not to adopt an “every man for himself” stance following Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election, calling instead for a “coordinated European strategy,” according to the government spokesperson

“The trend should not be towards ‘every man for himself’ or bilateral relations, but towards a coordinated European strategy,” the French President stated during a Cabinet meeting, as reported by government spokesperson Montbretzon.

Earlier, Macron had offered his “congratulations” to “President Donald Trump” on X, declaring that he was “ready to work together, as we did during his first presidential term.”

Macron also agreed with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to “work for a Europe that is more united, stronger, and more sovereign.” The two leaders had a phone conversation to “coordinate closely,” according to a spokesperson for the German government.

During the Cabinet meeting, President Macron “clarified that our role is not to comment on the choices of sovereign nations, but rather, as he emphasized, there is a need for a European strategic awakening.”

“He insisted that salvation does not lie in a complacent transatlanticism or a miserable nationalism. France must be a strong voice in Europe for more sovereignty, for preserving unity within the European Union, for protecting our interests, and for safeguarding our common borders,” Montbretzon explained.

“We must stabilize our European strategy, our European coordination on major issues we face, including climate change, defense, ecology, as well as trade and agriculture,” the spokesperson added.

“The United States are our allies and will remain so. The President obviously has a demanding relationship with President Trump,” she concluded.

Regarding the future of Ukraine, which is at war with Russia, Montbretzon stated, “Regardless of the choices Americans make, the situation in Ukraine, the security of Ukrainians, Ukraine’s victory, and ultimately our security cannot depend on a foreign power, whoever it may be.”
