The most dangerous social media challenges: Playing with death for a few likes

Social media hosts dozens of challenges, which, in the users' quest for popularity and visibility, often lead to tragic results

Newsroom December 7 09:13

The proliferation of social media has brought millions of people together, offering countless opportunities for creativity and entertainment. However, the dark side of this reality is dangerous challenges, often leading to serious injuries and even deaths. The incident of serious injury to a 13-year-old student from Rhodes, while trying to imitate the “Superman Challenge”, highlights the need for vigilance and awareness.

The 13-year-old student of Kalythia high school, during a school break, attempted the “Superman Challenge” with his classmates when he was seriously hit in the head. He was immediately transferred by ambulance to the General Hospital of Rhodes, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Doctors found that he had suffered craniocerebral injuries and experienced seizures, which necessitated his intubation.

Due to the seriousness of his condition, it was decided to evacuate him to the Agia Sophia Children’s Hospital in Athens. The 13-year-old was transported by C-27 of the Air Force, as his condition is considered extremely critical. The unfortunate event has caused shock in the school community and the local community, while questions are being raised about the need for greater supervision of students and better information about the dangers of such challenges.

The most well-known and dangerous challenges
The Rhodes incident is not an isolated incident. Social media hosts dozens of challenges, which, in users’ quest for popularity and visibility, often lead to tragic results. Let’s look at the well-known and dangerous ones that are responsible for injuries and even deaths.

Superman Challenge
In this challenge, participants are challenged to “fly” like Superman, often jumping over moving objects or obstacles. The chances of failure and serious injury are huge, as the incident of the 13-year-old in Rhodes proves.

Blackout Challenge
One of the most deadly trends, it invites participants to suffocate themselves until they pass out. Deaths of children have been recorded from this dangerous challenge.

Skull Breaker Challenge
Participants fall to the ground in a violent manner after being kicked by others, causing serious spinal or head injuries. Incidents of permanent injuries have been documented.

Benadryl Challenge
Taking an overdose of the drug Benadryl for hallucinations has led to overdose deaths, particularly in young adults.

Fire Challenge
Participants set fire to parts of their bodies, resulting in severe burns and permanent physical damage.

Tide Pod Challenge
Ingestion of detergent capsules has caused poisoning, damage to internal organs and in several cases death.

Videos of these particular challenges continue to garner thousands of views on TikTok, despite the serious risks involved in the activity. While the successful videos showcase the apparent “magic” and spectacle of the challenge, the “failed” videos, which document accidents or minor injuries, often become even more popular. Although TikTok has occasionally displayed warnings about the dangers of these challenges, many users still participate, ignoring the risks and recommendations of the platform.
