Anthi Fakidari on modeling and life in New York: “I’m always ready with a suitcase, waiting for them to tell me, ‘You’re leaving tomorrow’”

The first Greek woman to walk for Victoria's Secret spoke about her life in New York

Newsroom December 12 09:23

Anthi Fakidari, the first Greek woman to make her dream come true by walking on the Victoria’s Secret runway, gave an interview and described her daily life in New York, the challenges she faces as a top model, and the difficulty of maintaining a long-distance relationship.

The model spoke on the show “Autopsia” and initially explained how her participation in the renowned Victoria’s Secret show became a milestone in her career.

“After the Victoria’s Secret show, I said I want to stay here. I’ve been here since the beginning of October. I really like it here. I’ll stay as long as needed, and we’ll see how it goes. Most models start in Europe to build a career, gain experience, and then sign in America. It’s the peak for a model,” she said characteristically.

Her daily life in New York is defined by waiting and constant readiness, as she describes. “One day I might not have any castings, another day I might have one, or even three… I am always ready with a suitcase, waiting for the phone to ring at any moment and for them to tell me ‘you’re leaving tomorrow,'” she says.

Equally overwhelming was her experience at the Victoria’s Secret show, which returned this year after a six-year hiatus. She spoke about the intense casting process she had to go through.

“I signed with my agency in May, came in September, and started the castings for Fashion Week. That’s when I learned about Victoria’s Secret’s return. I was shocked when I found out they would hold castings. At the first casting, the casting director told me I seemed very well-prepared and that they would see me again in the afternoon,” she explains.

She then added, “I went to the second casting; there were fewer girls, and we had to walk in underwear. I was sure I had done very well. I didn’t know there would be a third casting. ‘I said, great, now I’ll reward myself.’ I got a donut and a milkshake. The next moment, they called me and told me that the next morning we had the third casting. A week and a half later, my agency called me and told me I got the job.”

However, success did not come without challenges, as she revealed, referring to the rejections she has faced. “I think all this doesn’t mean anything for the future. We’ll go through castings again. I’ve worked with Chanel, Ferrari, Armani, Bulgari, Ralph Lauren. In most castings, I leave without knowing if they liked me or not; I don’t get feedback. I’ve received countless no’s. Now, it doesn’t affect me. At first, it might have; I cried, I was overwhelmed. Now, it doesn’t affect me anymore,” she concluded.
